Investing in our youth by creating jobs for students

 Blaine Calkins MP Report

We all know that experience, combined with knowledge, can be the deciding factor when it’s a question of entering the labour market. The economy continues to be our government’s top priority in 2011.  With the economic recovery still fragile, we are focused on creating jobs and economic growth.

Our Government knows how hard it is for young people to find work, which is why we are making a new permanent investment in the Canada Summer Jobs program.  Each year, the Canada Summer Jobs program makes it possible for thousands of young students everywhere in Canada to acquire essential work experience.

The new investment will create as many as 3,500 more jobs every summer for students across Canada.  The new jobs will give more students much needed employment during the summer and the opportunity to gain the skills and experience they need to succeed.  These jobs will also support local economies in communities across Canada by providing small businesses and not-for-profit organizations with employees who will help meet their needs.

The Canada Summer Jobs program helps small businesses and not-for-profit organizations across Canada create summer jobs for students.  The program encourages not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses (fewer than 50 employees) to create jobs that not only meet their needs, but benefit students looking to gain work experiences.

In 2010, the Government of Canada concluded agreements with approximately 22,000 organizations to fund about 37,000 summer jobs for students.  Starting in 2011, the Government of Canada is permanently increasing the budget for Canada Summer Jobs by $10 million, bringing the total program budget to $107.5 million.  The additional $10M is provided from existing resources, supporting the Government’s commitment to return to balanced budgets and ensuring value for taxpayers’ money.

Applications will be available on February 1, 2011 and must be submitted by February 28, 2011. Interested employers can apply online at www.servicecanada.gc.ca/csj2011 or at their local Service Canada Centre.
