Blaine Calkins MP Report
Welcome Back!
As the fall session of Parliament begins, our Government is excited to be able to act on our election promises – promises that saw the Canadian people give the Conservatives a strong, stable majority government.
Our Government has strongly and consistently opposed the previous Liberal government’s $2-billion long-gun registry. The long-gun registry is wasteful and ineffective; and it needlessly and unfairly targets law-abiding Canadians. It does nothing to reduce crime, or to strengthen our efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. We remain committed to getting rid of this billion dollar boondoggle.
Our Government is also working to implement our ambitious job-creating free trade plan that will benefit all Canadians. The Government of Canada continues to build upon the many successes of our Americas strategy, which focuses on three key areas: prosperity, democratic governance and security. The Americas are an increasingly important economic region and our Government has an active and engaged strategy to strengthen ties, improve market access and promote security in the Americas.
On May 2nd, Canadians gave this government a clear message: continue with our mandate to make our streets and communities safe. By moving quickly to reintroduce comprehensive law-and-order legislation, our Government is fulfilling our commitment to take action to protect families and hold criminals accountable.
Canadians want and deserve to be able to feel safe in their homes and communities and that means that criminals need to be off our streets. Our Government is committed to ensuring criminals are held fully accountable for their actions and that the safety and security of law-abiding Canadians and victims comes first in Canada’s justice system.
We will continue to fight crime and protect Canadians so that our communities are safe places for people to live, raise their families and do business.
Canadians can be proud of the nearly 600,000 net new jobs created since July 2009. This growth is encouraging and a sign we’re on the right track for Canadian families. We know the global recovery is fragile – especially in the United States and Europe. Although Canada is projected to have among the strongest economic growth in the G7 in the years ahead by the IMF and OECD, we are not immune to global economic turbulence. That’s why our Conservative Government is working hard to implement the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan – and its job-creating measures like the Hiring Credit for Small Business.
